Friday Football finals: Thomas Heyward 52, Hilton Head Christian 23; John Paul II 36, Carolina Academy 14

Both of the county's SCISA football teams showcased their quick-strike capabilities Friday night en route to two home wins as Thomas Heyward beat visiting Hilton Head Christian 52-23 in a non-region matchup and John Paul II topped visiting Carolina Academy 36-14 in another non-region contest.

Thomas Heyward was led by River Pender’s two rushing touchdowns and two Jake Masters TDs.

Thomas Heyward trailed 10-0 in the first quarter, but a Timber Hexamer sack in the end zone for a safety cut the deficit to 10-2 and Bobby Payne took the free kick 72 yards for a touchdown. Logan Thomas hit Zach Bond with a pass for the 2-point conversion that tied the score 10-10.

Pender’s 2-yard run for a score gave THA a 17-10 lead after C.J. Cleland’s extra point. HHC responded with a Floyd Hargrove 90-yard kickoff return for a TD, but the extra point failed.

Back came the Rebels. Thomas tossed 65 yards to Chipper Hammond to the 5-yard line. On the next play, Pender ran for a 5-yard TD. Thomas ran for the 2-point conversion and a 25-16 halftime lead.

Masters had a 66-yard interception return for a TD. Zack Black added a 2-point conversion to give THA a 33-16 lead.

J.R. Patterson’s 14-yard touchdown run gave the Rebels a 39-23 lead. To start the fourth, Masters scored on a 64-yard pass from Thomas to increase the lead to 46-23.

Black then grabbed his second interception to set up a 1-yard TD run by Thomas to give THA a 52-23 lead.

Thomas Heyward (4-2), which has won three straight games, visits Williamsburg Academy next Friday in a non-region game.

Doe leads John Paul II

Zack Doe had touchdown runs of 60, 63, and 69 yards in the first half to propel the Golden Warriors, who led 20-0 at halftime. Nyleem Wright added an 8-yard touchdown run and Melik Frost had a 3-yard rushing TD.

John Paul snapped a two-game losing streak.

Doe, who entered the game with 1,011 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, had 15 carries for 245 yards. Frost added 99 yards on 19 carries.

John Paul II (4-3) visits Christian Academy next Friday in a non-region game.

Jaguars rest

Ridgeland-Hardeeville High had a bye this week. The Jaguars return to action next Friday at May River in a SCHSL Region 8-AAA contest.
