Player diary: Rebels ‘locked in’ for John Paul II

  • Carmen Pinckney/Special to JCST THA quarterback Logan Thomas and the Rebels are ready for a SCISA battle Friday against John Paul II.

Logan Thomas is a senior quarterback at Thomas Heyward Academy. On Friday, Thomas and the Rebels host John Paul II in a SCISA Region 2-A rivalry matchup. The Rebels are coming off a bye week; the Golden Warriors (3-2) lost 50-27 at Dorchester last Saturday. Here are Thomas’ thoughts on the upcoming game:

We are midway through our season with a 2-2 record. Even though we would like to be 4-0, these first few games do not hinder our chances of going to State. These games allow us to see who will step up and make plays, who will give 100 percent for four quarters, what needs improvement and allow the coaches to make adjustments.

But practice time is over. Our region play opens this week, which begins our quest for a state title. First up is our in-county rival John Paul II.

The buzz around town is about this week’s “big game” when we host John Paul II on Friday. I think the hype is because John Paul II is an in-county SCISA competitor who is in their second year of 11-man football and showing much improvement from last year.

Both teams have increased rosters and have prepared hard in the off-season. Our team approach and preparation for this game will be the same as any other game with the only difference being mindset knowing this is a region game.

Everyone will be locked in and ready to hit pads on Friday night.

Other upcoming region games are Oct. 13 vs. Dorchester (Senior Night), Oct. 20 at Palmetto Christian and Oct. 27 at Colleton Prep.

Every practice and every game going forward is important. Our team is more hyped now than all season. Our team has worked hard together this year and has gelled into “One Team with One Goal!”

Each team member knows the others have their back. We just need to remain focused, be ready for anything, treat each practice as if it was a game and enjoy playing football.

We are ready to make a statement.
